Portals by Bradley Tryon

  • Monterey Library 452 Main Road Monterey MA 01245 United States (map)

The work of another Monterey resident, Bradley Tryon, will follow Gilbert’s exhibit. Tryon’s Portals: Recent Works on Paper will open on Friday, June 13, with a reception that evening from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Tryon chose the title “Portals,” as he feels it reflects his sense of “being transported” while he works. He finds that the features of his paintings often “draw viewers into another reality.” As he works, “flowers of the imagination, dancing trees, musical abstractions and wildly animated landscapes take shape,” the artist asserts. Bold colors, patterns, geometric and natural forms emerge from Tryon’s use of acrylics, spray paint and stencils, to reveal “somewhat surreal images” that often surprise even him. He cites Paul Klee as his most important artistic influence, along with a wide range of music that he uses to create inspiring soundscapes. Tryon generously adds that he is influenced by Tryon has an interesting background: he seems to have lived everywhere, and Fragmented Bouquet, oil pastels. also had every kind of job. Originally from New Jersey, he headed west as soon as he could, even undertaking a cross-country hitchhiking journey at 14. (He was apprehended in Colorado and sent home!) Though he is largely a self-taught artist, he took art classes while living in California. Tryon has also lived in places as varied as Florida, South Africa, and now is well-settled in Monterey. Likewise, his jobs have ranged from hotel manager to yoga teacher. The artist notes having visited most of the Knox Gallery exhibits—music to our ears. We are frequently surprised that artists apply for a solo show having never attended an opening, submitted work to a community group show, or even seen our space. He seems to appreciate Monterey’s wealth of “people who choose to express themselves creatively.” Don’t we all, as he says “feel so honored to be part of the rich confluence of artists in Monterey and the Berkshires?”
