Edith Wilson: A Legacy of Art and Community

  • Monterey Library 452 Main Road Monterey MA 01245 United States (map)

Our 2026 opening exhibit, Edith Wilson: A Legacy of Art and Community, will open on Friday March 13 with a receptionthat evening from 5:30-7 pm.

Wilson (1913-1995), a multi-talented and longtime resident of Monterey, made many significant contributions to our community.  Born in Cairo, Illinois, Edith was a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1942, she and her lifelong friend and fellow artist, Marjorie McLaughlin, established a home and studio that has become a cornerstone of the town’s community and cultural life.

Upon her passing, she bequeathed not only her farmhouse and 28 acres of land to the town, which was developed privately by townspeople to become the Monterey Community Center, but also her paintings -- several of which are on display at the Town Hall. Additionally, she founded the McLaughlin-Wilson Scholarship Fund (administered by the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation), which dramatically aids Monterey’s youth in pursuit of higher education.

We look forward to exhibiting this retrospective view of her work and personal style, which is a reminder of her legacy as a benefactor to Monterey. More on Edith in April’s Monterey News (or on the Monterey Library /Knox Gallery website) as the exhibit is on view until April 18!

Edith Wilson’s commitment to community support and citizenship was remarkable. We hope that by establishing and fostering the Knox Gallery we have followed in her footsteps. We continue to thank the community for enthusiastic support, and we look forward to seeing you at the opening reception, or while the show is on view.
